Mentoring
The aim of mentoring within WIT is to facilitate the personal and professional growth of our members through the formation of successful coaching and mentoring relationships.
All members have access to our mentoring system which is based on a self-matching philosophy. You can get started straight away by searching the membership database for Mentors or Mentees. You can contact anyone you feel might match your requirements immediately or you can send an email with your selections and we will contact them for you to guage their interest in pursuing an ongoing mentoring relationship.
If you are uncomfortable with finding a match on-line WIT will also host regular matching events designed to facilitate the introduction of potential mentors and mentees. Check the Calendar for the date of our next event. You should also keep in mind that any WIT event or program offers opportunities to find an appropriate Mentor or Mentee. Don't be afraid to ask the question of any WIT member.
Once you have found the right person you can use our Mentoring Resources to help you establish and maintain a successful relationship. These resources include:
-
Mentoring Agreements
-
Role Definitions
-
Suggested Activities
-
Feedback Mechanisms
Finding the right Mentor or Mentee can be a difficult task so don't be put off if it takes some time. Our membership is always changing, with new members every month. Keep an eye on the newsletter for new member listings and attend as many events as you can. It will be worth it when the right person comes along. If you are feeling frustrated or simply don't know where to start contact the mentoring team for advice.
WIT also recognises that members seeking to establish a successful technology career may need some specialised assistance. We have applied for funding to establish two short-term coaching projects to assist the following target groups:
-
Getting Back to IT - for women returning to work or contemplating a significant change in career direction
-
Career Start - for students leaving full or part-time studies to enter the workforce
These projects focus on the skills and information required to gain employment and put in place a successful career development strategy. More information will be available soon.
